Nicola Coughlan Still Can’t Quite Believe That She Is the Star of Bridgerton
Sarah • February 1st, 2021 0 comments

Vogue chats to the Irish actress about corsets, costume dramas and the great Shonda Rhimes.

Nicola Coughlan’s Bridgerton story begins in Hollywood.

It’s funny to imagine that anything to do with this lush, glossy Netflix period drama, filmed across England in the most English of locations and set in the most English of time periods—Regency-era London, when Jane Austen ruled the roost—could begin anywhere else. But that’s where it started with Coughlan, or rather, that’s how it started.

Because Coughlan, the 34-year-old star of Derry Girls, thought she had the measure of Bridgerton when she went into her first audition. “When you hear Shondaland is making their first show with Netflix and it’s going to be this big budget, incredible period drama, that translated in my brain to: ‘20 auditions minimum, in and out.’ It’s America: you hear about all these scary executives,” Coughlan muses to Vogue over Zoom from her cosy flat in London.

“I thought OK, audition one is going to be routine. Go in and read and maybe they’ll call you back.” Which meant that she went into her first audition for the role of Penelope Featherington, ginger of hair, yellow of dress and unlucky of mother, with absolutely zero trepidation. She did some readings, had a chat with the casting director and that was that. “I thought, we’ll see if I ever hear back,” Coughlan says, laughing.

Spoiler alert, reader, but Coughlan got the job. In fact, she got the job off the back of that one audition—and herein lies the Hollywood rub. “I got a call about a week or two later from my agent saying, ‘They want you for it,’” Coughlan recalls. “And I said, ‘Well what does that mean?’ Thinking it was some fancy Hollywood lingo I didn’t understand.”

BFI and Radio Times Announce Bridgerton Panel
Sarah • January 26th, 2021 0 comments

Calling all Bridgerton fans! BFI and Radio Times are teaming up to host an exclusive online event with the Bridgerton cast and the creator of Netflix’s hit period drama.

Set to be the talk of the town, the digital event, which will stream on the BFI’s YouTube channel, will see broadcaster Kirsty Lang in conversation with Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick and several cast members, including stars Phoebe Dynevor (Daphne Bridgerton) and Regé-Jean Page (Duke of Hastings) to chat about all things season two.

Joining them on the virtual panel as part of the Television Festival are stars Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton), Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington), Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury) and Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton).

During the event, which will be available from 7pm on Wednesday 27th January, the panel will be discussing “the show’s groundbreaking approach to character and plot, diverse casting” as well as use of contemporary music, visual splendour and adapting Julia Quinn’s hugely popular novels.

Bridgerton, which landed on Netflix on Christmas Day, has since climbed the platform’s streaming chart thanks to its Regency era drama, saucy scenes and scintillating scandals.

The series, produced by Grey’s Anatomy’s Shonda Rhimes, looks at the competitive world of London’s Ton in the 1800’s, where well-to-do families enter their debutantes in the marriage market.

The eight-part series mainly focuses on the Bridgerton family, who are the subject of the anonymous Lady Whistledown’s scandal sheets and whose eldest daughter Daphne makes her social season debut.

‘Derry Girls’ and ‘Bridgerton’ Star: How I Shop
Sarah • January 24th, 2021 0 comments

We all buy clothes, but no two people shop the same. It can be a social experience, and a deeply personal one; at times, it can be impulsive and entertaining, at others, purpose-driven, a chore. Where do you shop? When do you shop? How do you decide what you need, how much to spend and what’s “you”? These are some of the questions we’re putting to prominent figures in our column “How I Shop.”

You might have already fallen in love with Nicola Coughlan on “Derry Girls” (or, perhaps, on “The Great British Baking Show: Holidays” special starring the “Derry Girls” cast), but many are being introduced to the Irish actor as Penelope Featherington (and…) on the highly-anticipated, much-talked-about Shondaland series “Bridgerton.” Since the latter dropped on Netflix on Dec. 25, she’s been promoting it pretty much non-stop — from home, of course, as the U.K. and Ireland are in lockdown. That hasn’t discouraged Coughlan and her stylist from pulling all the stops when it came to her wardrobe, though.

Even as press days and premieres went virtual, Coughlan has continued documenting her many, many outfits for the socially-distant TV appearances, photo shoots and Zoom events she’s been “attending” on her Instagram. Some of the most memorable ones represent a who’s-who of the design scene across the pond: a #fashiontheology-embroidered Simone Rocha shirtdress for a junket, a J.W. Anderson runway look for “The Graham Norton Show,” a golden Klements gown for a Refinery29 shoot. In conversation, she’s proud to talk about a designer’s roots in the U.K. and Ireland (Rocha, Jonathan Anderson, Orlagh McCloskey and Henrietta Rix of Rixo).

She’s equally excited to put the spotlight on the ones you might not know yet: Recently, she and her ‘Bridgerton’ cast mates did a photoshoot for Netflix U.K. in partnership with the British Fashion Council (BFC), where they wore pieces designed by BFC Scholars inspired by modern-day gossip columns.

“They all had the same brief and they all took it really, really differently,” Coughlan tells me over — what else? — Zoom. “The designer that I worked with, his name is Edward Mendoza. He’s a print designer, so he designed these really graphic prints that were ‘Real Housewives of Regency,’ a burn book, Twitter birds and stuff like that. They were just so cool.”
